Andry's Symbol

The logo of the JOE W. KING ORTHOPEDIC INSTITUTE is an abstract representation of a crooked tree that is bound and undergoing repair, as published in a 1741 book entitled L'Orthopdie by French Professor of Medicine Nicolas Andry. Andry formed the term "orthopaedics" by combining two Greek words: orths (meaning "straight") and paidon (meaning "child"). Andry drew his crooked tree splinted to a stake to depict his conception of orthopedics as a straightening of the deformed child.

We have adopted this classic symbol in honor of Professor Andry and the long history of orthopedic medicine. Our colors and the brush-stroked appearance complement the logo of Texas Orthopedic Hospital, in which the INSTITUTE is physically housed.
